Global neighbourhood in the climate crisis
From Pakistan to the Andes, people everywhere are confronted with the catastrophic effects of climate change. Saúl Luciano Lliuya - a farmer and mountain guide - lives in Peru, where global warming is contributing massively to the melting of glaciers. The glacier lake Palcacocha above the Andean city of Huaraz has grown menacingly - an ice avalanche could cause it to overflow at any time.
The German energy company RWE is the largest single emitter of CO2 in Europe and is partly responsible for the glacier melt and the flood risk in Huaraz. Saúl Luciano Lliuya has filed a lawsuit against RWE because of this. He demands that RWE pays for protective measures at the lake. It may still take some time before a verdict is reached. But climate change will not wait.
That's why Saúl Luciano Lliuya who acts for many others worldwide, needs your support now!

The climate crisis knows no borders
We live in a global neighbourhood: from Pakistan to the Andes, people everywhere are confronted with the catastrophic effects of climate change. Saúl Luciano Lliuya - a farmer and mountain guide - is one of them. He lives in Peru, where global warming is contributing massively to the melting of glaciers. As a result, the glacier lake Palcacocha above the Andean city of Huaraz has grown considerably - an ice avalanche could cause it to overflow at any time. Saúl Luciano Lliuya and more than 50,000 people of Huaraz are acutely threatened by a flood wave.
A global neighborhood dispute: Saúl Luciano Lliuya versus RWE
Saúl Luciano Lliuya decided to take action. In 2015, he filed a climate lawsuit against RWE. RWE describes itself as the largest single CO2 emitter in Europe. The corporation is thus partly responsible for the melting of glaciers in the Andes and the risk of flooding in Huaraz. In his lawsuit, Saúl demands that RWE contributes to the costs of building a protective dam at the glacier lake Palcacocha. This is a global neighborhood dispute. There may be 10,000 km as the crow flies between the plaintiff and RWE's headquarters in Essen, but the corporation's emissions do not stop at any national border.
Companies must be hold accountable
Saúl Luciano Lliuya's lawsuit has already made legal history: The court in Hamm (Germany) has confirmed that a private company can in principle be held liable for protecting those affected from climate risks it has caused. A great success which will have impact worldwide!
Take action!
However, a verdict is still pending. But climate change does not wait. With every day the risk of a flood wave in Huaraz increases! That's why Saúl Luciano Lliuyas needs your support now. Stand with Saúl and join him in demanding that big emitters take responsibility.

We can't just wait and see what happens. For me, RWE is partly responsible for the risks we face in Huaraz.
